Facebook began as a tool for connecting college students and alumni. The first Facebook users had to have a college e-mail address to get an account. When Facebook became open to the public, its popularity grew. Facebook can be used to keep track of friends, family members and voluntary groups which users can click to join. These groups can then send updates to members letting them know about upcoming events, stories, or links relating to the group or cause. They can also be used for fund-raising.
Support Detroit Transit is a group that supports Transportation Riders United in Detroit. This group has nearly 3,000 members and has raised $348 from its Facebook members. They use their Facebook page to update members on progress, share links about transportation policy and raise money for their non-profit.
